Visits to Catholic and Eastern Orthodox/Catholic Churches

  • St. Ireneaus Church, Cypress

I attended a mass at this Catholic Church to welcome Father Patrick Moses as Administrator here from being parochial vicar, Santiago de Compostela Church, since  Fr. Patrick Rudolph, has been named pastor, St. Norbert Church.

I also note that Msgr. Michael Heher, whom I knew when he was at St. Irenaeus and who brought a group of 10 Catholic leaders to the Newport Beach temple Open House, has been renewed for six years as Vicar General (Just under the Bishops and Assistant Bishops in the Orange County Diocese).

  • St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Costa Mesa

When this Catholic Church was Celebrating its Anniversary with a special Mass celebrated by Bishop Todd Brown, I attended the service and stayed for the luncheon and party afterwards. Attendance was too large to fit in the Church, so the mass was held outside.  The Choir was beautiful, the comments by Bishop Brown were excellent, and the stained glass windows donated by a wealthy member were beautiful.

Since they are one of two churches in Orange County being given permission by Bishop Brown to hold one mass each week following the Tridentine Latin (pre-Vatican II) mass, I attended that mass a few weeks later and agree that, though my single Latin class was in high school, it was very ancient and very beautiful that way.

  • Saint Georg Chaldean Catholic Church in Santa Ana

I attended this Church service, which was conducted by Pastor Father Awraha Mansoor.  Their mass in a combination of Chaldean (Syriac) and English, is the most ancient in the world, and their music was wonderful.  I offered some of my unused sound gear, and they were very appreciative.

That afternoon was their annual Picnic and festival of Chaldean music at a park in Fullerton.  I was invited as the guest of honour, and spent the afternoon talking with these wonderful people.

This church originated in Iraq and, since the Shi’a Muslims have come to power, have suffered immensely, and are being forced to Immigrate to the U.S. One of their leaders told me that their greatest problem is that thousands of them stuck in refugee camps in Syria and Lebanon cannot get expedited permission to come to the United States, including his aunt. I plan on finding if any Latter-day Saints are in a position to help.

  • Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, San Diego
Coordinated with a trip to San Diego for my granddaughter’s soccer tournament, I attended this beautiful Greek Orthodox Church, and met their recently installed Pastor, Rev. Fr. Theofanis J. Degaitas, Protopresbyter.  I discussed with him my appreciating that his Orthodox Church was laid out in the inside like the ancient Israelite Temple, and had many points of comparison with our own LDS Temples.

Visits to Evangelical / Conservative Christian Churches

  • Saddleback Church, Lake Forest

I attended an excellent service at this evangelical megachurch, at which the message was given by Youth Pastor Douglas Fields.  I enjoyed music particularly; probably because of funding issues affecting all churches at this time, the worship music much simpler, consisting of leadership by Worship Pastor playing his acoustic guitar and only six or seven additional performers.

  • Mariners Church, Irvine

I attended this mega-church and enjoyed the good spirit there, and a good message on handling tough times.  The worship music was also toned down greatly compared to two years ago.  My friend since he was at Knott Avenue Christian Church, worship music pastor Stan Endicott, sang and playing keyboard, with four soft instruments backing him up. He insisted that the staff preventing people from talking to him on the stage afterwards let me up to talk with him, as he always does.

  • Cottonwood Christian Church, Cypress

I attended this megachurch in Cypress for about the fourth time since they opened their new worship center.  The program, including the altar call, was conducted by Sean, the son of Sr. Pastor Bayless Conley, whom I had met when he was a teenager at the service dedicating the land for the new church.  He is now the teaching pastor for their Young Adult service on Sunday evening.  He has his father’s charisma, and is very bright, so he will be a very effective pastor in the future.

  • Seacoast Grace Church, Cypress

I attended a service at this growing megachurch in Cypress, struggled for several years as they underwent a Senior Pastor replacement crisis.  They are now flourishing again in the extreme. And the Pastor noted that their construction of a new center on their current location will be 36,000 square feet.  Again loved the very toned-down worship music of about 10 musicians led by a singer / acoustic guitarist.

  • Vineyard Christian Fellowship, Anaheim

I attended this church on a Sunday when the Sr. Pastor, Lance Whitluck, was out of town.  The message on praying for healings and other interventions by God was by Dr. J.P. Moreland, Biola University’s top philosopher and theologian, whom I have heard at Biola events five times.  He said that prayers for healings were clearly part of the New Testament Church, the he considered himself one of the better practitioners, we should verify whether healings actually take place, that we should publicize them when verified, and that his percentage was about 6% successful.  He also gave the most valid reasons I have ever heard of why the Lord would not answer these prayers.

  • Cornerstone Church, Anaheim (Affiliated with the Foursquare Churches founded by Aimee Semple McPherson)

I attended this thriving church in East Anaheim, and renewed my relationship with their Senior Pastor and his wife, Rick and Carol Danna.  I can relate to him because he always has some of his grandchildren with him, including one on his shoulders.

  • Cornerstone Christian Church, Long Beach

Since my son had a recital by his piano students there, I attended the service before it, and enjoyed it very much.  I talked for some time afterwards with the Lead Pastor, Jerry Rueb, who had been the  Senior-pastor-loss crisis at Seacoast Grace Church in Cypress, after which he started this very successful church.  He also attended the Newport Beach Temple Open House afterwards at my invitation, and enjoyed our several-hour discussion afterwards.

Contacts with Wesleyan Scholars at Azusa Pacific University

I sent this e-mail to four scholars there:

Dear Wesleyan Scholars at Azusa Pacific University (starting with Dr.s Craig Keen, John Culp, Craig A. Boyd, and Keith Reeves);

As the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints works to define itself as closer to Christianity, we frequently have scholarly meetings, conferences, presentations, and firesides with other Christians, including Evangelicals and other Protestants.

The current unusual “Neo-Calvinist” movement seems to make it harder to find Arminian or Wesleyan scholars and thinkers with which to interact.

But I have noticed that many dissertations and articles by the some of the best LDS scholars (I have attached three very recent ones) are noticing that earliest Mormonism was nourished in Methodist circles, attracted many former Methodists as leaders and members, had many hymns that started as Methodist Camp Meeting songs, and had a theology not too different from Arminianism.

We want to begin many more interactions with Wesleyans, starting with some at Azusa Pacific University.

My questions are as follows:

Will  you add me to the email list for the Wesleyan  Theological Society Conference held at Azusa Pacific University each Spring?  I’m sure I will want to  attend?

Can I subscribe  to the scholarly journal, the Wesleyan Theological Journal?

Would any of the  four of you be appropriate people be be invited to participate in scholarly  meetings or conferences at the Center for Mormon Studies at Claremont, at Los  Angeles-area scholarly organizations such as the Miller-Eccles Study Group, or  for presentations for Firesides or Public Affairs Meetings in the Los Angeles  / Orange County area?  Or are there other Wesleyan scholars there who  would be more interested?

In Response to my e-mail to four scholars there, I received the following from one of them:

Thank you for your interest in the Wesleyan Theological Society.  Probably the best source for answers to many of your questions is http://wesley.nnu.edu/wts/   That site has information about the annual meetings, the journal, and a membership application form.l

Membership includes a subscription to the journal.  WTS does not have an email list to add you to, but the website has information about all activities associated with the Wesleyan Theological Society. You might contact Brent Peterson who is the promotional secretary for additional information.  His email is bdpeterson@nnu.edu

As you will notice, the annual meeting moves from location to location.  Next year’s meeting is at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.  The following year the meeting will be at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville.  I don’t know of any plans in the near future to host the meeting again at Azusa.

I appreciate your interest in dialog with Arminians and Wesleyans as well as neo-Calvinist. At the present time, my obligations and interests make it difficult for me to participate in such dialogs. Many of my colleagues who take a Wesleyan approach to theology (I have cc’d them above) are currently working on other projects and unable to participate in dialogue.  One colleague, Dr. Karen Winslow, is interested in the interfaith dialogue center at Claremont primarily because of Jewish studies and is willing to be in contact about dialogues with Mormons. She may be contacted at kwinslow@apu.edu.  She also suggested that you look at Tom Oord’s blog at http://thomasjayoord.com/ and possibly contact him because he has a contact list of many Wesleyan thinkers.

John Culp

Based on these exchanges, I will begin attending events there and introducing myself to scholars involved.

Activities Related to Natural Theology / Design Arguments / Teleological Arguments / Final Causes / Intelligent Design

Two-day Conference on Intelligent Design at Biola University

I attended an Intelligent Design Two-day Conference at Biola University, which included getting the book Signature in the Cell signed by author Stephen Meyer; a session on the Cambrian Explosion, and a lunch with many of the leading thinkers of the movement.

Invitation to BYU Departments to Sponsor Conference on Intelligent Design

I invited some departments at BYU to sponsor a conference on intelligent design at BYU with the e-mail shown below:

I also was very excited about our lunch conversation, during which you let me know that an anonymous LDS source (not me) would be willing to sponsor the expenses of a Seminar on Intelligent Design at BYU, but that the Biology Department does not want to move from the “Theistic but completely Naturalistic Evolution” position (even though it leads to deism as surely as Design Arguments lead to a “God of the Gaps”, and the gaps are widening, not narrowing.)

I graduated from BYU’s Computer Science department, and know that Dr. Mark Clements and Dr. Quinn Snell there (and Mark’s sons Nathan and Kendall) are becoming experts on the mapping of DNA Sequences (see the wonderful article at the bottom of this message or at this link:

I would like to suggest the possibility of a seminar of presenters from the Discovery Institute and Biola sponsored jointly by BYU’s Computer Science Department and BYU’s Religion Department, to include also presentations by Daniel Peterson and Richard Sherlock at Utah State University.

Contact  of Wheatley Institute

On learning that the Wheatley Institution at BYU had a Symposium on Responding to the New Atheism, which included Intelligent Design Scientist Michael Behe, I communicated with the organization, asking for transcripts of the presentations.  They responded that they will be published in a book when editing is complete.  I will communicate back with them offering to help, and open the possibility of their sponsoring an Intelligent design session.

Steve’s Sourcebook on Design Arguments

At the suggestion of some Orange County Interfaith Relations people that I read David H. Bailey’s excellent article “Creationism and Intelligent Design: Scientific and Theological Difficulties”, I created a  Source Book on Christian and Latter-day Saint Thinkers and Leaders on Arguments from Design, Natural Theology, Teleological Arguments, Final Causes, the Anthropic Principle, and Intelligent design.   It contains about 2,500 pages of source documents on the subject through the years, and includes numerous LDS Leaders and Thinkers on the subject. I have attached it as a Word document, and listed the “Table of Contents” (15 pages) below in this report.

If you read nothing else, please read the November 2005 Brigham Young University–Idaho Devotional by Elder Douglas L. Callister of the Presidency of the Seventy, entitled  “Our God Is God”

A summary conclusion would be that:

  • The argument from Design has been accepted in western and eastern Christian thought throughout its history (a high proportion of those sources are here)
  • The arguments against it by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Charles Darwin had a massive negative effect (their writings are here)
  • In the last forty years, new study has answered the problems raised by Hume, Kant, Darwin, and new knowledge in science, have shown that the argument is more robust and useful than ever before (major portions of their writings are here)
  • Based on these facts, the Atheistic Philosopher who was the last great exponent of Hume, Anthony Flew, said that Hume is no longer a factor,  and has become a deist (major portions of his book are here)
  • The completely different sets of scientists and philosophers who now promote the Anthropic Principle and Intelligent Design are today’s perfect examples of the Teleological Argument

Based on these things, I will keep working to set up a conference at BYU.

Love & Thanks,

Steve St.Clair
