“Pre-born infant cradled in God’s hands”
Bishop dedicates memorial to unborn at El Cajon parish
Published: September 23, 2008

An estimated 350 people attended the opening Rosary Procession and Mass for the Novena for the Protection of Life and Marriage at St. Ephrem’s Maronite Catholic Church in El Cajon on Monday, Sept. 8, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary. El Cajon is a suburban city east of San Diego.
The Rosary began in the church, and participants then walked in procession toward the Mariam, Mother of Life Shrine, stopping at various places along the way to pray each decade. The procession was led by San Diego Auxiliary Bishop Salvatore Cordileone and Fr. Nabil Mouannes, pastor of St. Ephrem’s.
Twenty-one Knights of Columbus Color Guard members escorted the group. The procession stopped at the new Memorial for the Unborn at St. Ephrem’s, located just below the Mother of Life Shrine. The Memorial was dedicated and blessed by the bishop. Pro-life coordinator Pat Hansen read a prayer for an end to abortion by Priests for Life during the dedication ceremony. The memorial is of a pre-born infant cradled in God’s hands.
The crowd gathered below the shrine for Mass, celebrated by Bishop Cordileone and concelebrated by Fr. Mouannes. It was a beautiful and moving location for Mass, during which Bishop Cordileone encouraged everyone, along with praying the Rosary Novena, to join our evangelical brothers and sisters in a 40-day fast for the passage of Proposition 8. The fast begins on Sept. 24. He also encouraged everyone to get involved in helping the campaigns for both Prop 8 and Prop 4. While acknowledging the need for our material involvement, he emphasized that this was ultimately a spiritual battle and urged us to employ the traditional weapons of prayer, fasting and almsgiving – donations to both campaigns.
After Mass, the parishioners of St. Ephrem’s treated everyone to birthday cake to celebrate Mary’s birthday. It was truly a festive atmosphere and all were uplifted by the evening’s events. Many thanks to Bishop Cordileone for his leadership in the defense of life and marriage and to Fr. Mouannes and the parishioners of St. Ephrem’s for their generous hospitality to the San Diego community and their strong commitment to the pro-life cause.
Bishop Cordileone will celebrate Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary in downtown San Diego on Oct. 31 at noon, and lead a Rosary procession immediately following Mass to the County Administration building to close the novena. Thank you to all who attended and to all who are praying this novena. Please continue to spread the word! — Sue Lopez
